Measure or confirm the exterior length, width, and height. Allow for manufacturing tolerances and any structural deformation. |

Check usable internal space |
Internal dimensions are smaller than external dimensions and vary by design, wall thickness, floor construction, and fittings. Typical internal dimensions should be treated as approximate rather than guaranteed. |
Measure internal length, width, and height, plus door opening width and height. Check for protruding rails, hooks, and damaged flooring. |
Compare clear internal measurements with the actual dimensions of the cargo and loading equipment. |

Inspect the CSC safety plate |
A container intended for international transport should have a legible and current Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) safety approval plate. |
Verify the container identification number, approval reference, manufacture date, maximum gross weight, allowable stacking load, and racking test load where shown. |
Request a clear photograph or inspection record before purchase and confirm that the plate belongs to the container. |

Confirm current safety examination status |
Under the normal periodic examination approach, the first examination is generally required no later than five years after manufacture, followed by examinations at intervals not exceeding 30 months. An approved continuous examination program may apply instead. |
Check the next examination date, examination method, inspection records, and any repair or approval annotations. |
Do not rely on age alone; verify that the container has valid approval for the intended international transport use. |

Verify maximum gross weight and payload |
Maximum gross weight is the combined allowable weight of the container and cargo. Payload equals maximum gross weight minus the container tare weight, and both values vary by unit. |
Read the CSC plate and other permanent markings. Check the tare weight, maximum gross weight, floor rating, and transport restrictions. |
Calculate the actual payload using the specific container’s marked values rather than a generic estimate. |

Examine the structural frame |
The corner posts, top and bottom side rails, end frames, and corner fittings are critical load-bearing components for handling and stacking. |
Look for bends, cracks, severe corrosion, distorted corner fittings, unauthorized holes, and repairs that affect alignment. |
Obtain a qualified inspection when damage affects lifting points, stacking geometry, or door alignment. |

Check doors, seals, and locking gear |
Cargo doors should close squarely and locking bars, handles, retainers, hinges, and gaskets should operate correctly and provide weather resistance. |
Open and close every door, inspect the rubber seals, test the locking rods, and look for daylight or water entry around the perimeter. |
Reject or price repairs for doors that bind, cannot lock securely, or fail a basic weather-tightness check. |

Inspect floor and interior condition |
The floor should be structurally sound and suitable for the cargo. Common freight-container floors may use treated timber, but the exact material and treatment must be confirmed for the individual unit. |
Check for soft spots, delamination, broken boards, protruding fasteners, oil contamination, odors, mold, and evidence of chemical treatment. |
Confirm that the floor condition and any treatment are acceptable for the cargo, workplace, and local regulations. |

Match markings and documents |
The container identification number, CSC plate, inspection documents, sales description, and delivery records should refer to the same physical unit. |
Compare the identification number on the frame and doors with the CSC plate, photographs, quotation, invoice, and transport documents. |
Record the condition, dimensions, tare weight, CSC status, and agreed repairs in the purchase documentation. |
